  1. Women are less specialized than men, and long 
  2. accustomed to adapting to a variety of roles. In our 
  3. new instant-information environment, most men 
  4. who have been accustomed to specialist jobs and 
  5. functions must now switch from role to role in the 
  6. course of a day. In the big hierarchies this creates 
  7. extreme discomfort and dismay, and it is 
  8. increasingly obvious that women could perform 
  9. many of these functions better than men. However, 
  10. when a woman is compelled to assume the role of a 
  11. customs or immigration official, she becomes the 
  12. specialist monster, the very antithesis of role-
  13. playing. Yet we consider it natural for men to 
  14. perform these specialist functions.
